Waiting on the world to change
I was watching The Oprah Show today and it was about teenagers in a typical American highschool. They got different students to sit in this room and confess their hardships and problems in a circle to each other and had a huge therapy session. It was very highly emotional and a huge eye-opener. I mean, you know that even cool and rich people have problems but you don't know the extent of it until you really hear it from they themselves.
Watching a huge jock who's cool and popular breaking down and crying because he is also struggling with issues like his dad leaving his mom when he was young is a very powerful thing. Or watching an African-American boy break down because he was teased, spat on and laughed at because of his race is really sad. Once the barriers (discriminators like race, religion, looks, wealth etc.) came down, everybody was equal. We're all just human beings.
It's sort of natural today to stereotype people into categories like "the rich kid", "the jock", "the geeks" etc. It's almost become a way of life. You can even stereotype people by just looking at their appearance. I'm both a perpetrator and a victim myself when it comes to judging people. But no one has the right to do that. It's just not right.
They played John Mayer's "Waiting on the world to change" during the show and I think the lyrics are cool but I believe instead of waiting for change we all can contribute to it in our own way daily. After all, it's the small things that count, isn't it?
Waiting on the world to change (John Mayer)
Me and all my friends we're all misunderstood
They say we stand for nothing and there's no way we ever could
Now we see everything that's going wrong with the world and those who lead it
We just feel like we don't have the means to rise above and beat it
So we keep waiting
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change
It's hard to beat the system when we're standing at a distance
So we keep waiting
Waiting on the world to change
Now if we had the power to bring our neighbors home from war
They would have never missed a Christmas no more ribbons on their door
And when you trust your television what you get is what you got
Cause when they own the information, oh they can bend it all they want
That's why we're waiting
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change
It's not that we don't care, we just know that the fight ain't fair
So we keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change
And we're still waiting
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change
One day our generation is gonna rule the population
So we keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change
